MovieFix is a front-end movie database web application. My team and I built it during our Scripting 3 course. We used React.js for dynamic interfaces and TailwindCSS for fast, responsive styling. The app connects to the TMDb API, so users get real-time movie data.
Users can browse movie categories, view detailed information, and save their favorite films. All of this happens in a clean, intuitive, and responsive interface. The app includes four main pages. These are: Home (with categorized movie listings), About, Movie Details, and My Favourites.
We used React Router for dynamic routing. Additionally, we managed state with React hooks and context. Our team worked to ensure the app looks great on any screen, from 320px to 1980px. I originally designed the layout in a previous course. For this project, we brought that vision to life through teamwork and agile development.
I focused on translating my designs into a polished, accessible interface. For example, I paid close attention to typography, alignment, and user flow. As a result, browsing and saving movies feels effortless.
We deployed MovieFix with Vite, which ensures fast builds. The app is hosted online and available to the public. This project demonstrates best practices in API integration, local storage, and modern web design. It also gave me valuable experience in collaboration and advanced React development.
Goals:
- Develop a fully functional movie database web app using React.js, TailwindCSS, and the TMDb API.
- Create an intuitive, responsive interface that allows users to browse, search, and save movies with ease.
- Translate original design concepts into a live, accessible web application that works seamlessly across devices.
- Implement best practices in API integration, state management, and local storage for persistent user data.
- Strengthen teamwork, communication, and agile development skills through collaborative project work.
- Deliver a polished, user-focused product that demonstrates advanced front-end development capabilities.
Challenges:
- Integrating the TMDb API required careful handling of asynchronous data fetching, error states, and API rate limits.
- Ensuring consistent mobile responsiveness across a wide range of screen sizes involved extensive testing and iterative CSS adjustments.
- Managing application state for features like favorites and detailed movie views demanded thoughtful use of React hooks and context.
- Translating static designs into a dynamic, interactive interface required close attention to accessibility and user experience best practices.
- Coordinating development tasks and merging code changes in a team environment presented challenges in version control and workflow management.
- Deploying the app with Vite and troubleshooting hosting issues provided valuable experience with modern web deployment tools.
